energy right® New Homes Program

Huntsville Utilities in partnership with TVA offers the people and businesses in Madison County the benefits of the energy right® New Homes Program-- a program designed to promote energy-efficient construction of new homes.

An "energy right" home has been rated, inspected, and certified by Huntsville Utilities for energy efficiency, and comfort. We believe that the true cost of a home includes the utility bill and that the true value of a home includes the comfort and re-sale value.

It all starts before construction:
Huntsville Utilities computer rates the new home from the blue prints for energy efficiency on a scale of 0 to 100. The proposed home's monthly utility costs are estimated as materials such as windows, wall insulation, doors, ETC are compared. In order to qualify for the program, Signature III builders must select materials and construction methods that will bring the homes rating up to a level of at least 80. In the end, a plan for energy efficiency is set in place.

Upon completion of the new Signature III home, a Huntsville Utility inspector performs a through Heating /Cooling system inspection that covers the following items:

Air volume: A heat pump must deliver at least 400 CFM per ton if you plan on being comfortable and expect your unit to last several years.
Return leaks: "energy right" homes are tested for air return leaks so that damp, dusty air from a crawl space or hot air from an attic is not mixed with your system's filtered delivery air. A compressor check is provided to make sure that the unit is properly charged.

Industry standard duct design and workmanship is required : Straps at all duct work connections, insulation wraps, ETC Balanced air flow---Trunk-line dampers are required in "energy right" new homes so that air vents can be balanced and controlled. The air will be low in the bath and higher in the den. (Balanced air flow is the key to comfort)

Numerous other test are provided so that Signature III Homes finds problems before the home owner does. After the inspection, an "energy right" certificate is provided to the builder along with estimated utility cost.

IN SUMMARY:
"energy right" means better value through: Higher Comfort--- Lower Utility Cost--- Better resale value---
